Antenatal visits: a trimester-by-trimester guide
7 min read
What antenatal visits usually cover, how monitoring changes through pregnancy and which symptoms should prompt an earlier review.

First trimester
Early visits confirm the pregnancy, review baseline health and medicines, plan investigations and provide nutrition and symptom guidance.
Second trimester
Visits focus on growth, wellbeing, screening as advised and discussion of movement, activity, work and travel.
Third trimester
Reviews usually become more frequent and include birth planning, fetal position and growth, and clear guidance on labour and warning signs.
Do not wait for the next visit
Bleeding, fluid leakage, severe pain, severe headache, visual disturbance or reduced fetal movements need prompt medical advice.
