Gynecological Surgery consultation and patient care

Surgical care

Gynecological surgery

Surgery is considered only when it is the appropriate next step, and always after the alternatives have been explained.

When surgery may be considered

Most gynecological conditions are managed without surgery. Surgery may be considered when symptoms are significant and have not responded to medical management, when a diagnosis needs to be confirmed, or when a condition is best treated operatively.

Before any procedure, we discuss why it is being recommended, what it involves, what the realistic expectations are, and what the alternatives would be.

Approaches

Where suitable, minimally invasive approaches are preferred because they usually involve smaller incisions and a shorter recovery. Suitability is always an individual clinical decision.

  • Laparoscopic gynecological procedures
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Open gynecological surgery where clinically appropriate
  • Day-care procedures where suitable
  • Pre-operative assessment and counselling
  • Post-operative review and recovery guidance

When to seek medical advice

This list is general guidance. If something feels wrong, it is always reasonable to have it assessed.

  • Symptoms that have not improved with medical management
  • A diagnosis such as fibroids, ovarian cyst or endometriosis with significant symptoms
  • Abnormal bleeding requiring further evaluation
  • A recommendation for surgery elsewhere and a wish for a second opinion

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is laparoscopic surgery always better?

Not always. Minimally invasive surgery has advantages for many patients, but the best approach depends on the condition, its extent and your overall health.

How long is recovery?

Recovery varies with the procedure and the individual. Expected recovery will be explained during your pre-operative discussion.

Will alternatives be discussed?

Yes. Non-surgical options, where they exist, are always discussed before a surgical recommendation is made.
