Minimally invasive

Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) gynecology

Laparoscopy allows certain gynecological conditions to be assessed and treated through small incisions, when it is clinically suitable.

Laparoscopic Gynecology consultation and patient care

What laparoscopy is

Laparoscopy is a surgical technique in which a thin telescope with a camera is introduced through a small incision, allowing the pelvic organs to be viewed on a screen. Additional small incisions allow instruments to be used for treatment.

Possible indications

Whether laparoscopy is suitable is always an individual clinical decision.

  • Evaluation of persistent pelvic pain
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Certain fibroids
  • Evaluation in selected fertility cases
  • Selected gynecological procedures

Benefits and limitations

Possible benefits

Smaller incisions, less post-operative discomfort for many patients and often a shorter recovery.

Limitations

Not suitable for every condition or every patient; some situations are safer with an open approach.

Conversion

Occasionally a laparoscopic procedure needs to be converted to open surgery for safety — this is discussed beforehand.

Recovery

Recovery varies with the procedure performed and your individual circumstances.
