Pregnancy Care consultation and patient care

Antenatal care is the regular review of you and your baby through pregnancy. Its purpose is to track progress, identify concerns early and prepare for delivery in a calm and informed way.

Trimester by trimester

First trimester

Confirmation of pregnancy, baseline health review, early investigations and guidance on nutrition, medication safety and symptoms.

Second trimester

Growth and wellbeing checks, screening as advised, and monitoring of blood pressure, weight and blood sugar where indicated.

Third trimester

More frequent review, assessment of fetal position and growth, and discussion of delivery planning and warning signs.

Visits are unhurried, with time to raise questions about symptoms, work, travel, diet or anything else on your mind.

When to seek medical advice

  • Vaginal bleeding or fluid leakage
  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Severe headache, visual disturbance or swelling of the face and hands
  • High fever
  • Reduced or absent fetal movements
  • Persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down

Frequently asked questions

What should I bring to an antenatal visit?

Any previous reports, scan records, prescriptions and a list of your current medications. If you have earlier pregnancy records, please bring those too.

Are supplements necessary in pregnancy?

Supplements such as folic acid, iron and calcium are commonly advised in pregnancy, but what you need and when is an individual clinical decision made by your doctor.

Can I travel or work during pregnancy?

Many women continue working and travelling in pregnancy. Advice depends on your stage of pregnancy and clinical assessment, so please discuss your plans at a visit.
