Heavy periods: when it is worth seeing a doctor
5 min read
Heavy menstrual bleeding is common but not something you have to accept. Here is how to judge when evaluation is worthwhile.

What counts as heavy
Bleeding is considered heavy when it soaks through protection quickly, contains large clots, lasts longer than seven days or restricts your normal activity.
Possible causes
Heavy bleeding can have several causes, and evaluation aims to identify which apply.
- Hormonal imbalance
- Fibroids
- Adenomyosis or endometriosis
- Thyroid conditions
- Effects of certain contraceptives or medicines
What evaluation involves
Assessment usually begins with a history of your cycles, examination and simple investigations such as a hemoglobin check. Further tests are advised only when they will change management.
