Vaginal discharge: what is normal & when to consult

Vaginal discharge often changes naturally through the cycle. A change in colour, smell, amount or associated discomfort may need evaluation.

Vaginal Discharge consultation and patient care

Normal changes and possible infection

Clear or white discharge without strong odour, itching or pain can be normal. It may vary around ovulation, pregnancy or with hormonal changes.

Unusual discharge has several possible causes. Self-treatment can mask symptoms, so an assessment is useful when the change persists or causes discomfort.

Changes to discuss

  • Strong or unpleasant odour
  • Yellow, green, grey or blood-stained discharge
  • Itching, burning or soreness
  • Pain while urinating
  • Pelvic pain or fever
  • Symptoms that recur after treatment

What evaluation may involve

  1. 01

    History

Discuss the change, timing and associated symptoms privately.

  2. 02

    Examination

An examination only when appropriate and with consent.

  3. 03

    Testing

A sample or other test may be advised when it can guide care.

  4. 04

    Treatment

Treatment is based on the likely or confirmed cause.
