Ovarian Cysts consultation and patient care

Understanding ovarian cysts

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled or partly solid sac in or on an ovary. Cysts vary in type, and management depends on appearance, size, symptoms, age and life stage.

A scan finding is interpreted together with your symptoms and clinical history rather than in isolation.

Possible symptoms

  • Pelvic pain or heaviness
  • Bloating or pressure
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Changes in periods
  • Frequent urination
  • No symptoms at all

Possible next steps

Observation

Repeat review may be appropriate for a simple cyst without concerning features.

Medical care

Symptoms and any associated hormonal concern can be managed individually.

Surgical assessment

Considered for selected persistent, large, complex or symptomatic cysts.
